There is so much more to a cake decorator then just being able to work magic with a little sugar. Cake decorators need to be a jack of all trades. They are accountants, couriers, bakers, negotiators, designers and now- thanks to social media, they also have to be photographers.
A large majority of cake decorators rely heavily on social media to obtain business. When you’re bombarded on a daily basis with stunning images of cakes, how do you stand out from the crowd? No longer is a substandard picture of your hard work acceptable, most likely it will be overlooked. Many cake decorators would agree, that taking that perfect snap is sometimes easier said than done.
Janet O’Sullivan of Janet O’Sullivan Cake Design, recognised that many cake decorators were finding it a challenge to take a flawless picture.
“Getting the perfect backdrop and set up for a cake can be very difficult, especially when you don’t live in a studio environment” Janet said. So Janet has created an inexpensive cake backdrop to help make life a little easier for all the decorators out there.
The Australian Cake Decorating Network was lucky enough to take Janet’s cake backdrops for a test drive. The cake backdrops come in black or white and are very easy to set up. First the team found a spot in the room with good light- as good lighting is imperative to any good picture. Then we simply unrolled the backdrops over a couple of chairs, and placed a couple of books on each edge to hold the backdrop in place.
Once the backdrop was set up, it was just a matter of placing our cake on it and snapping away. Within a few clicks of the iphone camera, we had the perfect picture to post.
These backdrops can be used for anything and are not only for cake. We took pictures of chocolates, cookies and desserts and we were very happy with the results.
Depending on the colour of your cake, you will get different results using the white or black backdrop. It really is a matter of trial and error. We loved having both colours to play with.
