How and when did you get started in Cake decorating?
I started decorating when I had my first child and was determined to attempt to make his christening cake. At the time I was so impressed with my efforts but looking back now it is cringe worthy!
What is your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement so far is being able to build my passion into a successful little business all while looking after my two young children and keeping my sanity. It would also have to be that I am entirely self-taught with still so many things to learn.
What is your favourite style of cake to create?
My favourite style of cake would have to be anything pretty. I do love making cakes using modern elements and inspiration.
What cake trends do you see coming in the next 12 months?
I think that textures will be a big thing. I also think that these days decorators are drawing more inspiration from trends in fashion, interior design and art leading to new effects and techniques.
Who is your cake idol?
I have so many amazing people that I look up to but the main person who’s work absolutely has me gobsmacked is Timbo Sullivan from Cakes By Timbo. His cakes are so far from my style but I am in awe of his talent. I also love the amazing figurines that are created by Mio Shih from Deliciously Yummy Sydney.
What did you do prior to making cakes?
Prior to making cakes I was a primary school teacher. I loved teaching but struggled to find my passion for it once I had my own children. The best part is though I can still use my teaching skills within the cake decorating sector.
What is the one tool you can't live without?
I can’t live without my acetate smoothers. These babies can buff and polish any dent or mark!
Can you share a piece of advice you'd give to someone starting out in Cake decorating?
My advice would be to watch as many videos and take as many classes as you can and take from them whatever works for you. Trial and error is your friend. Don’t be scared to make mistakes and ask lots of questions.
